Permission To Take Care Of Yourself
This week, I caught up with a friend that I had not seen in 10 years or more. She shared with me what she had taken away from our friendship that has maintained her all these years. It seems that I taught her the importance of spending some time with herself before heading off to work in the morning. She reminded me that I had given her a book to write her thoughts in as she gave herself the "first light" before sharing herself with the world. I honestly did not remember having that conversation with her, but I was humbled to know that my words had been so inspiring. I gave her permission to take care of herself first.
To this day, she has held to that practice, has filled multiple journals, and has graduated to yoga and meditation every morning. This practice has given her insight, spiritual growth, and protected her energy. She has since passed on that "first light" tradition to her daughter.
Taking care of yourself first is vital to your emotional, spiritual, intellectual, social, and physical wellness. Only when we are well can we be of benefit to others. It is the framework by which we grow to our fullest potential. There is no other way to fill your cup than to do it yourself. As you practice self-love, you become even more valuable to your friends and family.
Set your clock to give yourself an hour before you begin to think of anything else. It may require that you go to be earlier, and that's okay too. Keep a journal of your time with yourself. Make the time to give to yourself, no excuses. I promise it will be time well spent. Your friends, family, and the world need the best you. Most importantly, you need your best self.
