If you often experience hair that is tangled, frizzy, breaking or splitting at the ends, chances are there is an ingredient at the top of the ingredient label on your shampoo bottle listed as sodium lauryl sulfate (sls). SLS is a harsh detergent or surfactant that manufacturers use in shampoo to increase the lather and foam in shampoo. Lather sells shampoo because most of us are misinformed and associate foam and lather with cleanliness, but the amount of lather in your shampoo is no way related the quality of your shampoo.
Sodium laurel and sodium laureate sulfates should be avoided because they strip the hair of it's natural oils, leaving hair frizzy, tangled, dry, and cause split ends which result in irreversible damage to the hair.
SLS is also an irritant which can cause redness and inflammation of the scalp and eyes. Sulfates also strip your color which may require you to color your hair more often which can also cause damage to the hair.
A good shampoo will help increase moisture retention while it gently washes away excess oil and dirt. It should clean the hair and scalp while maintaining the scalp's ability to secrete natural oils. A good shampoo will not harm the pigment, therefore, maintaining your hair color. Moreover, a shampoo should never be so harsh as to irritate your scalp nor cause dryness and flakiness. Natural Living Ideas has compiled a short list of some awesome shampoos that are free of SLS and other harsh chemicals, all GreenSistah™️approved.
